Rolex Explorer II (reference 1655), is specially designed for those cave explorers who often work in the dark can not distinguish day and night. This explains why it is set with a clear orange hand and 24 hours markers to tell morning and afternoon. This design was nicknamed “freccione” by Italian collectors in 1990s.
Have to admit, this watch is very not very popular. When the explorer II was first released in 1971, people were naturally to think that Rolex should at least take other professionals into consideration, so they can also benefit from this design.
Since 1971, Explorer II was only improved 3 times. In 1985, Rolex released the Ref. 16550, which was the first to provide black and white dial two versions to choose from. Also, the new movement brought a quick adjustment to set the date and the 24-hour time zone indicator. The 16550 version comes a sapphire crystal glass and upgraded bezel, which hand design is unique in the whole collection.
These advanced details were repeated on the Reference 16570 Rolex launched in 1989. Unless you are a watch expert, it is very difficult for you to identity the difference between Reference 16550 and Reference 16570, but naturally easier with Reference 16550. Reference 16550 with white dial is more smooth and delicate. In addition, its light color hands are changed into black.
Rolex fans will pay large price for some “shortcomings”, such as Reference 16550’s white dial change into beige. Rolex has become a top luxury watch brand represents perfect and tradition, so every tiny change such as dial, color or materials will make the world crazy.
There is no doubt that, many Rolex fans love the new large case. However, if Rolex wants to easily use 2 mm to catch attention for the Explorer II, this best selling sport watch will lose its real value.
